March 2018: A New Standard for Refurbished Devices
In March 2018, Amazon officially launched its "Certified Refurbished on Amazon" program, later renamed Amazon Renewed. The program was designed to give customers access to high-quality refurbished products that look and perform like new — at significant discounts .
What the Program Requires
For refurbishers to sell on Amazon Renewed, they must meet strict criteria :
Complete a diagnostic test on every device
Replace any defective parts — marketplace rules explicitly require OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) components
Perform thorough cleaning and inspection
Provide a minimum 90-day warranty
Amazon made it clear: starting January 16, 2019, only approved sellers can list refurbished products . Non-compliant listings would be removed.

Why This Matters for Refurbishers
The message from Amazon was unmistakable: refurbishment is not about "making things work somehow." It is about restoring devices to like-new condition using original components.
For laptop refurbishers, this meant one thing: screens, touchpads, and other critical parts must be OEM-grade. No exceptions.
